Important: When you block someone on classic Hangouts, they can’t message you in classic Hangouts but they can join Google Meet calls you organize. If it doesn’t, exit and re-enter the call. The video call should automatically connect. While we encourage everyone to make the switch to Chat, Hangouts on the web will continue to be available until later this year. In July, people who use Hangouts in Gmail on the web will be upgraded to Chat in Gmail.

Launching Hangouts reveals an “It’s time for Chat in Gmail” prompt that acts as a forced upgrade on Android and iOS to use the dedicated Google Chat apps or the Gmail tab. Zoom calls with 3 or more people have a 40 minute time limit, while a Google Hangout lets you hang out for as long as you like with no time limit. The first stage of this shutdown impacts the old Hangouts mobile apps that haven’t seen any major feature additions in several years and have been mostly unavailable for new Google Play or App Store downloads in recent months. Many users are finding that they can no longer access Hangouts for Android and iOS today.

As announced a week ago, Google is now in the process of shutting down classic Hangouts for free consumers. Hangouts are a type of online group meeting using webcams so that each of the participants can see and hear the others.
